With the general trend of decreasing formality in all aspects of American life, it is not uncommon to see people in almost any sort of dress at a bris. However, the brit milah ceremony is a religious event and its ambience is made more dignified and festive by wearing appropriate clothing. As a general rule people should dress for a bris as they would dress going to religious services at synagogue. Yarmulkes should be available for men to put on if they so wish. The father and the sandek will often wear a tallit although this is not required.
